If your child plans on playing a Middle School or High School sport for the 24-25 school year. They will need an updated physical that was done on or after April 15th, 2024.  The High School will be partnering with Metro Health to provide physicals at the new Metro Health Facility in Wayland on June 6th and August 6th, from 4-6. They will cost $25- cash or check only, made out to Wayland Athletics.

The Wayland Boys Tennis team took on visiting Zeeland East on Tuesday night. While Zeeland came away with a 7-1 win over Wayland, the Wildcats played competitively as they prepare for the Conference tournament on Thursday.The lone win for Wayland came at 3rd singles, as Chesney Hudson took his opponent to a 3rd set tie-breaker to decide the match.  In what turned out to be a battle of wills,  Chesney took the first set 7-6 (decided by a tie-breaker), dropped the 2nd set 4-6, then was the first to score 10 points as his opponent came back from a 3-6 deficit to make it close, 10-8.The Wayland Boys Tennis team will look to be competitive in the OK Gold Conference tournament, as they meet South Christian, TK, Grand Rapids West Catholic, Grand Rapids Union, Northview and Wyoming in a 3 match tournament to decide the final Conference standings.  Let’s go Wildcats!

The Wayland Wildcats traveled to Plainwell on Monday afternoon to take on the Trojans on their home courts.Wayland came home victorious, winning 7-1.  However, the Trojans did not go easily and gave Wayland a good battle on the Courts.Collecting wins for Wayland were: 1st Singles - Theo Oddy, 2nd singles Cam Sieffert, 3rd Singles Chesney Hudson, 4th Singles Jacob VanDuine, (1st Doubles defaulted due to illness), 3rd Doubles Grant Dunkle and Dawson Babiak and 4th Doubles Asher Hendricks and Malcolm Sheffer.Wayland takes on Zeeland East in Wayland on Tuesday, October 1st in another competitive match.

On Monday, the Wildcats traveled to Holland to take on the Dutch.  Wayland played competitively, but ultimately lost 2-6.  Taking wins for the Wildcats were 2nd Singles Cam Sieffert, playing through obstacles such as broken strings and worn out shoes but still winning 6-1, 6-4; and at 3rd singles Chesney Hudson, playing consistent, efficient tennis and taking his match 6-0, 6-0.At 4th singles, Jacob VanDuine again played his opponent to a 3rd set tie-breaker in what is becoming his trademark style.  This time, however, Jacob came up just short, falling in the 10-point tie-breaker with a score of 8-10.This was a significant warm-up match for the Wildcats as they prepare for the OK Gold Conferece tournament on October 3rd.

The Wayland Wildcats took on the Northview Wildcats on Monday in an OK Gold Conference tennis match at the Northview courts.  While Wayland came up short in the overall match 2-6, Theo Oddy collected his 2nd overall Conference win, taking on the venerable Andrew Hinds at 1st singles.  In the end, after a grueling 2nd set, Theo was able to come out ahead, taking the match 6-2, 7-5.At 4th singles, Jacob VanDuine had to go another 3-set match to collect his 3rd Conference win and improve his conference record to 3-1.Wayland takes on Grand Rapids West Catholic for their next match on Wednesday at their home courts.

The Wildcats took on OK Gold Conference rivals Thornapple-Kellogg Trojans on Wednesday night in Middlevile.  While Wayland lost with an overall score of 2-6, the individual game scores tell a tale of tennis matches that were very close, with 3 of the 8 matches going to full 3rd set tie-breakers.At 4th Doubles, Asher Hendricks and Malcolm Sheffer split the first 2 sets, then lost in the 3rd set 3-6.  At 3rd Doubles, the Freshman team of Spencer Miller and Brycen Rookus also split their first 2 sets, then came up just short in the 3rd set, falling 5-7.There were a couple bright spots for the Wayland Wildcats!  At 1st Doubles, Mason Babiak and Brayden Tomson handled the Trojans, winning 6-1, 6-2 to move their Conference record to 2-1 and their individual records to 6-3 and 7-2 respectively.The match of the day belonged to 4th Singles player Jacob VanDuine, playing for a grueling 3 hours and 25 minutes in 85* heat.  Jacob won the first set 6-1 and was seemingly ready to

Wayland hosted the Wyoming Wolves Wednesday night at a home match on a perfect day for tennis.  Wayland came away with a victory against a young Wyoming team, 8-0.Theo Oddy collected his first victory at 1st singles, 6-0, 6-1.Cam Sieffert won his match at 2nd singles, also with a score of 6-0, 6-1.Chesney Hudson continued his undefeated season with a 6-0, 6-0 win at 3rd singles.  Counting Wednesday’s win, Chesney has won  39 games (within a match) out of a possible 48 through 4 matches, for a win percentage of 81.25%.  Go Chesney!!At 1st Doubles, Mason Babiak and Brayden Tomson collected a win, 6-0, 6-0, keeping Brayden Tomson undefeated for the season as well.At 2nd Doubles, Grant Dunkle and Dawson Babiak won their match 6-1, 6-1 as well to round out the match for the Wildcats.Jacob VanDuine, Spencer Miller, Brycen Rookus, Asher Hendricks and Malcolm Sheffer collected Default wins for the 8-0 total score.The Wildcats move on to the Caledonia Invitational on Saturda

The Wayland Wildcats took on the Lowell Red Arrows on Thursday afternoon at the Lowell HS courts.  Wayland came away with a 7-1 victory, with the Red Arrows fighting all the way.At 1st Singles, Theo Oddy played tough against his opponent, but fell just short in the 2nd set.  Cam Sieffert handled his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at 2nd singles, along with wins by Jacob VanDuine at 3rd Singles, 6-0, 6-1 and Chesney Hudson (taking his first win as a singles player) at 4th singles, 6-0, 6-0.At 1st doubles, Mason Babiak and Brayden Tomson fought off a consistent Lowell team and came away with a win, 6-2, 6-4.  At 2nd Doubles, Grant Dunkle and Dawson Babiak had to go to a 3rd set tie-breaker to collect their win.  At 3rd Doubles, Spencer Miller and Brycen Rookus were victorious fighting off a comeback by the Red Arrows in the 2nd set.  At 4th Doubles, Asher Hendricks and Malcolm Sheffer played consistent tennis and came home with a win.The Wildcats will take on the Wyoming Wolv

The Wildcats Boys Tennis team met the Cedar Springs Red Hawks at their home courts on Thursday.  This is the 2nd match this week against a “Hawk” team (Hawkeyes and Red Hawks), and the Wildcats are 1-1 vs. Hawks.  Wayland came away victorious against a young Cedar Springs team - 7-1.Notable victories went to Dawson Babiak, Spencer Miller, and Brycen Rookus, all collecting their first Varsity wins for Wayland Union.  Great job guys!  Also to Isaiah Gates, who stepped up at the last minute to play Cedar’s exhibition player and won his match 6-3, 6-4.Another notable win went to Chesney Hudson and Brayden Tomson, winning their match 6-0, 6-0, bringing their record for the season to 2-0.  Jacob VanDuine also remains 2-0 at 3rd singles.All positions played well and the team is starting to shake off their early season jitters and find their pace.  There’s plenty more tennis on the way, with Coopersville and Lowell next week.  Great job Wayland Tennis!

On Tuesday, 8/19 Wayland hosted the Hamilton Hawks for the first Boys Tennis match of the 2024/2025 season.  While Wayland fell short 3-5, the team played tough against a very talented Hamilton team.  Congratulations to Jacob VanDuine, winning his match in a 3rd set tie-breaker against a Senior at 3rd singles, Chesney Hudson and Brayden Tomson winning a thrilling, 2-hour match in a 3rd set tie-breaker at 1st doubles, and Asher Hendricks and Malcolm Sheffer winning at 4th doubles.  The team will take on Cedar Springs at home on Thursday.

The Varsity Softball team defeated Hopkins in the MHSAA District Championship, on Saturday, 14-0.  MadiLudema took the victory in the circle. Leading the offensive attack was Hannah Rairigh going 3-4, with a Hame Run.  Harmony Laker also had three hits, going 3-5, with one Home Run.  Shelby VanHouten was 2-3 on the day. Madi Ludema had 2 HomeRuns, which ties Sierra Mutschler,s Home Run record, with 12 for the season.  Kaidence Burton and Kaylee Lown each added a hit. Reese Veltman, Lauren Wright and Rae Stallard each had a hit. Wright added a triple.  The Wildcats collected 15 hits in the contest.

The Varsity Softball team increased their record to 27-7-1, with a 15-2, victory over Lowell. Madi Ludema took the victory on the mound, in five innings of play. Leading the Wildcats offense was Hannah Rairigh and Reese Veltman, both going 3-3. Rairigh had a double and a triple. Shelby VanHouten was 2-2. Madi Ludema was 2-3, with a double. Carli Mikluisicak and Rae Stallard added singles.

The Varsity Softball team tied a strong Shepherd team, 6-6, on Saturday. Carli Mikluisicak pitched for the Wildcats. Leading the Wildcats attack was Izzy Johnson, going 2-2, and blasting a home run. Shelby VanHouten was 2-3, also blasting a home run. Hannah Rairigh, Resse Veltman, and Carli Mikluisicak added hits. Carli Mikluisicak blasted another home run for the Cats!

The Varsity Softball Team lost 2-4, to D2, state ranked #4, Frankenmuth on Saturday. The last time the Wildcats beat Frankenmuth was for the 2015 MHSAA State Championship at Michigan State. Madi Ludema only allowed four hits. Leading the Wildcats offensive attack was Hannah RiIrigh, Madi Ludema and Rae Stallard. Ludema hit a home run in the contest.

The Varsity Softball team took on a strong D1 state ranked HM team, Midland Dow, and lost in the 7th inning, by a score of 3-4, in international tiebreaker. Leading the Wildcats offense was Hannah Rairigh, Madi Ludema, Carli Miklusicak, Shelby VanHouten and Rae Stallard. Carli Mikluisicak blasted a home run and was 3-3, on base against the tough Midland Dow team.

The Varsity Softball Team increased their record to 23-4, winning 19 straight games, against the Byron Center Bulldogs, defeating the Bulldogs 7-6.  Madi Ludema and Harmony Laker pitched for the Wildcats. Leading the Wildcat attack was Kaylee Lown going 2-2, with a double. Harmony Laker was 2-4, with a double off the fence to clinch the win. Carli Mikluisicak added a double. Hannah Rairigh, Lauren Wright, Madi Ludema, and Shelby VanHouten added singles.

The Varsity Softball Team won their 18th game in a row and increased their record to 22-4, with a victory over Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills. Carli Mikluisicak threw a no hitter, striking out seven in 3 innings of play.  Leading the Wildcats offensive attack was Madi Ludema, Reese Veltman and Kaidence Burton. Reese Veltman had a home run and Kaidence Burton added a double. Hannah Rairigh was 2-3, with a triple. Harmony Laker added a double.
